Professional Development

McLane Middleton hires lawyers with the potential to grow into partners. When we recruit law school graduates, our goal is to select individuals who demonstrate strong intellect, initiative, sound judgment, good communication skills, and determination to develop into future leaders of our firm and community.

Our continued growth through economic highs and lows can be credited to our diverse practice, which presents associates with opportunities for challenging new work, and allows for growth when readiness for partnership responsibility is evident.

McLane Middleton views associate development as the responsibility of both the firm and the individual lawyer. We set goals, communicate, and use the wealth of resources available to challenge our associates, allowing McLane Middleton to continue to be the leader in legal services in New England.

We believe in continuing education, and McLane Middleton covers the cost for our associates to attend such programs as an employee benefit.

We also provide onsite training through associate-run seminars on basic aspects of legal practice and specialized instruction by senior practitioners.

Our library is one of the best in New Hampshire, and includes access to area universities and private collections.

McLane Middleton associates regularly receive performance evaluations to determine professional development and advancement toward partnership.

With regular meetings, firm-wide lunches, and many less-formal activities, McLane Middleton is an enjoyable place in which to learn and grow. We value collegiality and mutual support as the very principles of our firm’s culture.

Summer Program

In addition to full-time employment, McLane Middleton offers a Summer Associate Program.

For summer associates, we apply the same quality training and exposure within a shorter time frame with disciplined procedures to ensure that their brief stay is an enriching one. Our summer program is our principal hiring tool for permanent associates.

Offering flexibility around law student academic calendars, the program typically occurs from June to mid-August in our Manchester, N.H. office. By exposing students to a variety of assignments such as litigation, corporate and estate planning matters, this opportunity gives students an inside look at McLane Middleton’s work environment, and allows them to explore many practice areas and to experience the office dynamic.

Summer associates are tasked with projects from various practice groups, ethics research, and ongoing firm assignments. Our highly competitive program attracts students from top law schools, many of whom receive offers for full-time positions upon graduation.

A history of excellence

McLane Middleton was established in 1919 in New Hampshire, and has five offices across two states. However, deep historical roots don't allow you to become innate. Our firm is organized, technological, and knowledgeable. Our history means we are recognized. But our reputation is built on the highest quality of service and experience in very specific areas of law.
