Mon, Feb 25, 2008 - "Keeping Students Free of Alcohol and Other Drugs", United Educators' Web Conference for K-12 Schools, 1:00-2:00 PM ET. Did you know that nearly half of students in grades 9-12 nationwide admit to having at least one drink of alcohol in the past month? And, that one-quarter of these students report being offered, sold, or given an illegal drug on school property during the past year? Schools are faulted both when they do too much and too little in enforcing alcohol and other drug (AOD) policies. Join United Educators in a one-hour web conference to examine the following questions: How can your school determine the extent of substance abuse problems among students? What are the most effective ways to educate students and parents on the dangers of AOD use? Do "zero tolerance" policies work? What about non-disciplinary intervention, including safe harbor policies and behavioral contracts? Should your school implement drug testing? How can your school enforce fair and consistent discipline for students who violate AOD rules? These and other questions will be discussed by Karen-Ann Broe, senior risk counsel at United Educators; Renee Soulis, southeast regional officer & senior prevention specialist with FCD Educational Services; and David Wolowitz, partner in McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton P.A. The program covers substance abuse prevention, intervention, and enforcement of conduct standards at public and independent K-12 schools, camps, and other programs for children under age 18.
