Our Mission

At McLane Middleton, our collaborative team of professionals provides the most comprehensive legal services.  Our attorneys maintain integrity and expertise to earn long-term, trusting relationships with our clients and the communities in which we live and work.

With over 90 attorneys and 25 paralegals, our progressive approach and team enables us to work with all types of clients, and to deliver customized, cost-effective solutions.  Our organization, hiring practices, training, and use of technology give our professional team the ability to provide deep legal expertise in a wide breadth of areas.

McLane Middleton is the largest, most diverse law firm in New Hampshire, and has been steadily growing since 1919.  In 2008, our New Hampshire law firm expanded into Massachusetts to accommodate clients’ growing legal needs throughout New England.

McLane Middleton holds the respected honor of being listed as one of America's leading law firms in Chambers USA: America's Leading Business Lawyers.  In addition, The Best Lawyers in America® publication recently endorsed 38 of our attorneys; nearly all of whom have been listed multiple times. Our firm and select attorneys also carry the highest legal ability rating in Martindale-Hubbell

In 2014, McLane Middleton was named Business of the Year by Business New Hampshire Magazine.  This award was in recognition for the high quality legal work and commitment to the community displayed by the professionals at the firm.

McLane Middleton is proud member of TerraLex, a worldwide network of quality law firms that meet high professional standards.

McLane is guided by the principle that attorneys should be active participants in community and professional organizations. Our lawyers are deeply involved in various groups, and also regularly volunteer their time for community service work. We are driven by a sense of purpose that it's essential to do what we can to better our communities.

McLane's Diversity Committee focuses on increasing diversity at all levels, monitoring firm progress and recommending actions to be taken to meet the goal of developing and maintaining an equitable and diverse workplace.

Linda Johnson,
Chair of McLane Middleton's Diversity Committee

We continue to seek out, attract and retain qualified women and individuals of color, and very much value the ethnic, religious, sexual, age, physical challenge and economic diversity that exists among our attorneys and staff. McLane Middleton's Diversity Committee focuses on increasing diversity at all levels, monitoring firm progress and recommending actions to be taken to meet the goal of developing and maintaining an equitable and diverse workplace. The Diversity Committee is chaired by Linda Johnson, a partner and Co-Chair of the firm's Education Law Group.

Promotion of a more diverse employee population continues to be at the forefront of the firm's strategic plan. This effort begins at the top with the firm's Management Committee and Executive Director, and extends to the Hiring Committee and the Diversity Committee. The firm has expanded its recruiting efforts to include on-campus visits to law schools in larger metropolitan areas.

New Hampshire's geographic location in northern New England can make meeting some diversity goals challenging, but fuels our motivation to continue our efforts.

The firm also has a long history of giving back to the communities in which we live and work. This includes sponsoring events with organizations that serve diverse populations in order to benefit the community and raise our profile with potential applicants for employment. These organizations include: The Latino Summit; Girls Inc.; NH Women's Leadership Conference; the Women's Fund of New Hampshire; Vote Hispana; and The Armenian Milk Fund.

Pro Bono Work

Working with pro bono clients and assisting them through a maze of legal complications they could not maneuver without you can be among the most challenging and rewarding work an attorney does.  It leaves you with the feeling that you are giving a person or a family help they never would have otherwise received.

Dennis J. Haley, Jr., Director and Chair of the Pro Bono Committee

Since its inception, McLane Middleton has expected and encouraged pro bono work by all of its attorneys. From John McLane to Jack Middleton to the firm's newest associates today, individual attorneys at the firm take their pro bono responsibilities very seriously. McLane Middleton has a proud heritage of providing legal services to the poor and underprivileged citizens of New Hampshire, and more recently Massachusetts. As a firm, we regularly look for opportunities to further enhance our efforts.

McLane Middleton was a recipient of the New Hampshire Bar Association's 2008 Pro Bono Award for distinguished pro bono service.

McLane Middleton's Pro Bono Policy encourages all our attorneys to annually perform 30 to 50 hours of pro bono service for the underprivileged citizens of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Many of our attorneys exceed that goal.

Our Pro Bono Policy

The firm recognizes and affirms its continuing commitment to undertake pro bono work. The work affords attorneys an opportunity to perform an enormously needed and worthwhile service. The range of pro bono work is broad and includes opportunities for attorneys of all disciplines.

We take our pro bono commitment seriously. Pro bono work undertaken by the firm is subject to the same standards of attention and professional performance as any other work undertaken by the firm. All McLane Middleton lawyers working on pro bono matters are able to seek advice and assistance from lawyers working in the various specialty areas that may be relevant to the matter in question.

A history of excellence

McLane Middleton was established in 1919 in New Hampshire, and has four offices across two states. However, deep historical roots don't allow you to become innate. Our firm is organized, technological, and knowledgeable. Our history means we are recognized. But our reputation is built on the highest quality of service and experience in very specific areas of law.

Our team continuously seeks opportunities to enhance their professional development and put key learnings to action. The pursuit of further insight guides us to volunteer service opportunities, speaking engagements, and teaching roles.
