It is with profound sadness that McLane Middleton announces the passing of our President, Jack B. Middleton. Jack was the heart of our firm: not just a leader who shaped who we are, but also a mentor to generations of attorneys in our firm and a friend to everyone who walked through our doors.
Jack’s career spanned more than six decades as a trial lawyer, including 24 years of service as a New Hampshire District Court Judge. He was a towering figure in the New Hampshire legal community, serving in many roles, including as president of the New Hampshire Bar Association. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a recognized leader nationally through his service to the National Conference of Bar Presidents, as well as his work with the American Bar Association, where he served as the New Hampshire Bar’s delegate and later as Secretary. One achievement that Jack was most proud of was bringing the concept of using interest on lawyers’ trust accounts to help fund legal services for the poor.
But Jack’s impact reached well beyond the legal profession. He served the Mount Washington Observatory in multiple capacities for decades, including as its president. He was president of New Hampshire Public Television, the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way Board of Directors, among many other civic roles. He was recognized with a lifetime achievement award by the Business & Industry Association of New Hampshire.
He gave his time, his judgment, and his humor to nearly every corner of this community and the legal profession.
“Jack’s life was truly well-lived,” said John D. Colucci, Managing Director. “There isn’t a lawyer at this firm who didn’t learn something from him, whether it was how to try a case or how to treat people. He gave that same generosity to this entire state, and we are going to miss him enormously.”
