The McLane Law Firm is pleased to announce that David Wolowitz will return as an invited speaker at two national conferences for independent schools.
On December 6, 2013 David will be a speaker at The Association of Boarding Schools. (“TABS”), 2013 Annual Conference, in Boston. TABS has 300 member boarding schools and its annual meeting is the preeminent national event for boarding schools.
Along with Ethan Shapiro of Phillips Exeter Academy, David will present a session entitled, “Safe Student Relationships Through Roles, Boundaries, Power & Accountability”. Together, they will discuss the ways in which a behavioral approach to risk management benefits students, employees and the school. The presenters will offer practical advice relating to policies, procedures and training with regard to promoting healthy and safe relationships with students.
On February 27 and 28, 2014, David will be a speaker at the National Association of Independent Schools Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. The NAIS Annual Conference is the largest meeting of its kind for independent schools with over 3500 attendees. David will join the Head of School of Hotchkiss School in presenting practical advice on campus safety. He will also present along with the Head of School of Marin Academy on how to deal with reports of past misconduct. He will present with the Summer School Director of Phillips Exeter Academy on risk management in summer school programs.
David serves as Co-Chair of McLane’s Education Group. He has been a practicing attorney for 38years. His background and experience in key legal areas, including employment, mental health, contract, criminal, fiduciary and tort law, enables him to provide practical and useful advice to his clients, which range from small, local independent day schools to some of the country’s most prestigious private boarding schools. He advises his clients on all aspects of legal issues, risk management and crisis response, working closely with heads of school, deans, financial officers, trustees, health providers and others. He trains school administrators, faculty and staff on safe practices to protect students in their care. He also trains his clients on how to operate safely, how to recognize and address signs of inappropriate behavior and how to respond to allegations of misconduct.
He has been qualified in multiple cases as an expert witness on the adequacy of independent school policies and procedures relating to the protection of students from harassment and misconduct.
David received his J.D. from the University of Michigan, his M.A. from Harvard University and his B.A. from Washington University. He is admitted to practice in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, U.S. District Court for New Hampshire, U.S. District Court for Massachusetts and the First Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association, Fellow, New Hampshire Bar Association. He has been invited to be a guest faculty for the Trial Advocacy Workshop at Harvard Law School for 29 years.
