Gregory H. Smith Named Concord’s Lawyer of the Year for Environmental Law

McLane’s Environmental Law Group Also Top-Listed in New Hampshire

McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, Professional Association is proud to announce that Woodward/White’s Best Lawyers in America® has named Gregory Smith as Concord’s “Lawyer of the Year” for Environmental Law for 2012.

Best Lawyers® compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The current, 18th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2012) is based on more than 3.9 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.

After more than a quarter of a century in publication, Best Lawyers is designating “Lawyers of the Year” in high-profile legal specialties in large legal communities. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is being honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.”

Greg is chairman of McLane’s Administrative Law Department, which encompasses the firm’s regulatory and environmental practices. He has over 30 years experience in environmental and regulatory law and litigation involving the State, federal and local governments. He was the New Hampshire Attorney General following service as a homicide prosecutor in that office. He has led the firm’s environmental, regulatory and government relations practice since leaving the position of Attorney General in 1984.

His practice has involved representation of McLane’s clients under all the major environmental laws in permitting, enforcement and litigation matters. For example, he has represented a major energy company in the development of a 720 megawatt natural gas fired electric generating station; the development of natural resources including municipal, industrial and bottled water supplies; permitting and enforcement matters concerning hazardous and solid waste; and wetlands and shoreland protection. He has also handled a wide variety of other types of regulatory cases involving insurance, transportation, the Liquor Commission, the Sweepstakes Commission, governmental competitive bidding and numerous legislative lobbying projects.

Greg was elected a Fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers, a Fellow of the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors of The New England Council.  He also served as Legal Counsel of the New Hampshire Senate from 1992-1993.

Greg received his J.D. from the University of Maine in 1973 and his B.A. in Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1969.

He resides in Concord.

Steven Naifeh, President of Best Lawyers, says, “We continue to believe – as we have believed for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession. We would like to congratulate Greg Smith on being selected as Concord’s ‘Best Lawyers Evironmental Lawyer of the Year’ for 2012.”
