July 31, 2009, Concord and Manchester, NH: The law firm of McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, Professional Association, with offices in Manchester, Portsmouth, and Concord, New Hampshire, as well as Woburn, Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that on July 8, former McLane litigation partner, Carol Ann Conboy, was sworn in as a Member of the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
Justice Conboy, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Connecticut joined the McLane Firm after serving as a law clerk for then Federal District Court Judge Shaine Devine. Justice Conboy started as an associate and eventually was elected a director and shareholder of the firm. She left McLane in 1992 to become a judge of the New Hampshire Superior Court. After service for 17 years as a judge in Superior Court, she was elevated to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, only the second woman to serve in that capacity in the entire history of New Hampshire.
After the swearing-in ceremony held at the New Hampshire Supreme Court in Concord, one of the two speakers on the occasion was McLane Senior Partner Jack B. Middleton. Jack praised Justice Conboy as having “great wisdom, grace and judicial temperament.” In civil cases, he noted that Justice Conboy didn’t just grant or deny motions, but wrote opinions that gave attorneys the opportunity to understand her reasoning. In criminal cases, he said both defense and prosecution said they thought Justice Conboy was fair, which Middleton noted as perhaps the highest compliment a judge can receive.
